World Record Holder Attempts to Save Endangered Species

By Taryn Womack

It’s the time of year again when the “weirdos” come out of their shells for a moment to hop onto a website and sign up for GISHWHES. What is GISHWHES? That would be the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen. This Guinness World Record holder has thousands of participants on over 100 different countries. GISH is run by Misha Collins, famously known for his role as Castiel in the CW’s Supernatural.

Each year GISH partners with different organizations and raises money for a charitable cause. They have helped women and children in impoverished parts of Africa, women’s shelters, refugees, veterans, orphanages, beach cleanup and much more. This year the goal is to help save endangered species, specifically the Asian Unicorn also known as the Saola. But along with them, GISH is looking to help save the Southern White-Cheeked Gibbon, the Chinese Three-Striped Box Turtle, the Red Shanked Douc Langer, and the Large Antlered Muntjac. To do this, GISH has partnered with Rainforest Trust to help secure 2000 acres of land as a preserve for these animals. With only 70 left in the world, they are striving to make enough for save these creatures.

Known as “a vacation from normal,” Collins and GISH come of with some crazy items to look for on the scavenger hunt. One year, participants had to make a portrait of Collins’ co-star Jensen Ackles entirely out of Skittles. In previous years the task was to make a beard garden, make a dress out of recycled material, dig up a dinosaur, and many other unique things.

If this sounds right up your alley, there are multiple ways you can help out GISH. You can donate to the cause. If you don’t necessarily have the time to participate in the scavenger hunt but want to help out, they always accept donations, along with Gisholarship donations. Gisholarships are for people who can’t really afford the registration fee but really want to join. When you donate a Gisholarship, it helps someone else join in on the fun. Lastly, you can join GISH. If you love the idea of a week of fun crazy adventures and getting to know more people all while helping out charity, this is the perfect thing to do. You can sign up here. The Hunt starts July 27th but sign up quick before time runs out!
